It's only taken over a year but I've finally got my Yamaha kit set up. I've really missed it and what better way to put it to use than on a Marceys special. I'd forgotten how much those toms sing with their (ancient!) coated ambassador heads on compared to the rockier thump of my Spaun kit. No matter how many kits I own now or in the future, my 9000 will always be my favourite. I'm using 10x10", 13x11" and 14x12" ...

mpointon Thanks, Oli! I'm using my trusty Ludwig and with only a top mic as I'm using a five-piece setup. The main change is I'm using an expander/compressor on the snare to open up the sound. It makes a big difference! +1

mpointon I've got the Waves L1 compressor/expander processing it - just very simple gain/limit controls - chained into the V-EQ4 using the standard snare EQ preset!

The biggest change is the overhead positions (again!). Finally got them somewhere they're getting the cymbals' body and some kit presence too. In fact I have to back them off to around 50% mix now.

Biggest problem is the amount of ride cymbal the mics on toms 1 and 2 pick up. For the outro swing section, I had to splice and delete the audio tracks of the toms where I wasn't playing them because the bleed was causing funny-sounding peaks on the ride.

I'm trying to get as 'studio' a sound as I can without resorting to multiband compressors on the overall kit - always takes the energy away for me as well as making remixes sound overprocessed.

OliVBee i fully agree on the overprocessing issue ! you might want to limit the multiband processing to just the toms pick up to get rid of the excessive ride bleed ? +0

Hey Martin, so great to hear you again! Love the early snare you brought in! Gives a great drive to the blue parts. Than the yellow parts, the game starts rolling real cool! Needs the bassplayer now! :) +2

crisp and bright :) classy sounds !real nice Martin :) +2

Heaps of drive in this. Red section was particularly difficult as Marc had the same rhythm but laid back on pushing the feel. Match for the last section perfect. This one seems tougher than it appears on the surface. +2

mpointon Thanks, Wade. It's reassuring: I always worry that playing 'dead ahead' and 'standard beats' is unoriginal and boring and I should be more creative. I have to keep reminding myself it's what drummers are supposed to do! Keeping good time is more important than being a clever clogs.

Well that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it! :)
