Ms. Lorraine (Life is Simple Again)

he gets up
glances at the clock its half past 10 a cigarette will do until he fills this empty mug
on the porch, the heat is setting in the neighbors children playing life was simpler once upon a distant past
life was just playing in the grass

flip flops on
he’s only half way speeding coasts up to the stop light
there’s a dog a man whose playing violin on his face he wears a grin

She fakes a smile
her makeups perfectly diguising how she hasn’t
slept in days her apron’s got yesterdays stains


as she walks the behind a bar
a man with empty mug he yawns and turns to say to her
the coffee will not make itself you know
boy im glad you see mrs. lorraine

she grabs the mug
and works her magic finally feeling like herself
again she laughs you know i missed you too, old pal

and for a moment all was well

we all know
it wasn’t really coffee that they shared
the sparkle in their eyes that said i care
and grin on the face of the man with the violin
with hot coffee in his hand
life is simple once again
