2013 - the end is near :) So let me sum up the latest development changes that I managed to add early this month...
First of all, there was the release of the spanish interface, opening wikiloops to another 400 billion spanish speaking people on this planet.
BIG THANKS go out to a man namen Leonardo Huerga from argentina, who has single handedly done the whole interfaces translation - and we are talking about many, many pages of text there. Thank you amigo, a great deed done, and many who will have a lot of fun because of your efforts!
Next, I took some days and heavy thinking setting up the reply-on-comments and like-comments function - something that I once considered a pretty useless feature when YT implemented it, but seeing that one didnt get any notice in case somenone else wrote a comment in reply to ones comment and so a lot of possible communication didn't occur, I now felt it was a good thing to have. Adding the proper information to your news feeds was the heavy task on the job, and if you still see some rather strangely grouped notifications, then here is the reason... Its just unimaginable, how difficult it is to do a good notification system, seeing that there are so many possible things one would like to notify about - "A liked a comment on your track" / "A & B liked a comment on your track" / "A liked two comments on the same track" / "B replied to the second comment A liked" and so on and so on :) Well, I feel the current system does do a good job to keep one up to date, and since I havent been recording much this year, its nice to at least get some feedback on the comments I left and feel like I'm part of things - a situation i imagine to be quite common within the community.
Then, since I was at it, I had another go at the mobile device interface I have been thinking about for some time now. I ended up integrating a script that does detect wether you are surfing by mobile device or by desktop pc and that serves diffrent layouts of wikiloops depending on what you are looking at. So, in the end I worked across all of the more prominent wikiloops pages to make them usable on a small smartphone screen, mostly be rearranging things and without loosing any functionality on the "small" wiki interface.
Seems people like not having to scoll & zoom all the time. I believe theres still a lot of room for improvements, especially for tablet users (to whom the interface might look as if there was a lot of spare place, due to their added screen width compared to a smartphone - maybe a third interface for tablets will solve that in the end.) I do believe there are still some problems with safari browsers I have not been able to fix - p.e., the automatic track playback wont work on default, which will make listening to a playlist only half as much fun, because you will have to start every track yourself... I'm not sure about ways to fix that, and I would really appreciate to get some iPad / iPhone users helping me out with possible beta testing cases - I still dont own any apple devices, so some feedback would be really helping me out here.
After the little legal troubles of this year concerning the taxreports, I got myself together in time and sent off the necessary numbers on christmas day this year, after sitting over these numbers for another two days. To keep my mood up, I dared a glance into this years numbers as well, wich I'll report in the annual numbers thread soon - Thanks to all who donated - looking pretty good so far, let me tell you that much!
One last side note before I'll end for this year - I'd like to give thanks to OliVBee here, for he helped me out with my other project of this year a lot: As some will know, I have been travelling with german artist Mellow Mark in 2013 doing his soundengineering. We did record a live album on the tour which contained about 60 concerts all over germany, and Oli did the mastering of the final recording for us after I had spent weeks selecting and mixing the tunes. So nice to have a little wikiloops on the album this way, too, thanks ;)
I end with the current stats as always: 8979 Members, 11962 Tracks online
