Nils-I was just listening to this track a few weeks ago and at the same time ran across a device called a Jaguar mute by Fender which is a flippable mute . It was made for guitar but bassists install them too. I just did the install on my P bass. Fender Sean Hurley signature P basses also come with it. I did it specifically to get the bass tone on Carol Kayes "Boogaloo." I never have to worry about losing my sponge.
The sponge is just a strip of self adhesive window weather stripping . Works great.
