Feature change notice: How to ignore the foolish on the loops

Hey!

This is about the strangest feature change I have announced in 15 years of operating wikiloops, a short preamble:

Nobody is a fool on wikiloops - or, it's generally okay to be a fool on wikiloops (as long as you stick to the rules).

If I am now to introduce the new "Block user" feature, then that is not because I feel that we have a huge amount of members who one would need to escape from.

I have witnessed enough people irritating each other, and in some cases failing to simply ignore what the other kept on doing.
There are these cases of irritation - be it the remix notification that turns out to be someone who creatively chopped up and distorted your heartfelt composition, the dude who annoys by offering advice nobody asked for or the member which seems to be fishing for attention by ... the list is endless, we have a culturally diverse community here, so, who's surprised there is a bit of human tension every now and then.

I used to receive outraged emails by members demanding I had to stop user X from doing Y by force of moderation. This often lead to a deadly triangle of me having to draw lines:
wikiloops rules allow you to remix as you please, so, if you are going overboard on your electric cello and ruin my track, that's totally okay by the rules.
So, I ended up having to decline any moderation help, leaving the outraged member in the rain and potentially pissed off about wikiloops.
The only hope for the "victim" was to disable remix notifications, or block the annoying user from appearing on ones newsfeed.

In reality, these remedies only helped a little, because if you are starting your daily visit to wikiloops on the homepage looking at the latest contributions (as many do), you were still not saved from seeing the outrageous idiots uploads and getting your daily reminder the perceived offender of good manners was still on the loose.

This is why I have followed up on a recent discussion in this forum and have merged the existing "newsfeed block" and "messages block" features into the upcoming "Block user" functionality.

Once that is live, activating the user block will remove the blocked users activity from your sight completely, including track lists, comments, forum - anywhere.
You will still be able to visit a blocked users profile to potentially lift the block, and I believe it will make life a lot easier for those who'd otherwise loose their fun on wikiloops to some fool.

As any feature change on wikiloops, this is open for your feedback and might be reviewed after it has been in place for some time. I do not suggest you use it, if you don't instantly have someone on your mind that has been annoying you.

Two last bits of info to complete the picture:
1. user blocks are one way and discrete. That means: The blocked user is not informed in any way, and you are not blocked by them, so they can still "see you" + your tracks.
2. I hate to say it, but you won't be able to block me or the other moderators on wikiloops :)

Let me know your thoughts, questions or comments
& thanks for checking this out

Dick, you know better than anyone else if this is necessary. Just one suggestion, don't call it BLOCK user but IGNORE user. That's more to the point and doesn't suggest that a user is blocked from Wikiloops.

Hey Dick,

most social media platforms have some sort of blocking feature, so it seems only natural that on a global platform with a certain number of members, there will be situations where one person’s behaviour is perceived as disruptive by another – whether due to cultural differences, weird personality, individual mental health issues, or other reasons. In a way, it almost seems to be something ‘natural’ (sorry, I can’t think of a better term).

However – and (as always ;)) with a positive outlook – I would perceive this feature more as a kind of 'filter' that allows users to focus on the content that interests them most. Together with the ‘Follow this user’ feature, it therefore helps each of us to curate the content that matters to us individually.

Thanks for all the effort you put into Wikiloops!

Same thoughts, almost in parallel :)

I supported Wikiloops not for their name, I support it because it was a great idea & is a great way for musicians to jam outside their circles.
