My daddy worked that old coal mine
and he told me not to walk that line
And in my 18th year
While we drank a little beer
He said in time you'll seek and you will find
'Cos you'll never find the light in this damn' mine.

Oh my daddy was a mighty man
And for me he had another plan
And he didn't make a sound
In that twenty years underground
But I finally got to hear him roar!

He said "son go out and make your life,
And one day you will find a wife
There's a big old world to see
Far away from Tennesse
And this dark cold mine will cut you like a knife
