There is a hill
In the distance,
That I used to scale with ease,
Climbing, climbing
Finally breathless at the top,
And I would look around,
So proud of my ascent.

I could conquer anything.

Now the hill stands
Before me,
Like a quiet monolith
And I look up at it
With awe and wonder.

Slowly I try to
Trudge up the hill,
And I slip a bit,
So I try again,
And start to stumble.

I sit at the bottom
And look up,
Silent in my defeat.

But maybe the hill
Doesn’t want me anymore.
Perhaps it’s OK to travel flat,
To find another way
And go somewhere else…

To bypass the hill,
And enjoy a new terrain,
Bereft of rocks,
And slippery stones,
Where there is a wild wonder nearby
That I have never seen,
That I have never known.

Perhaps it’s ok to let the hill stand
For others to conquer,

And to be the one
Comfortable in my new terrain
Content with my memories,
Now cheering them on.
