It ain’t pretty but its true
You know we’ve all hardships
Ain't that just what we do?

You know I ain’t complaining
This life-that’s all I knew

I was born a’swearing
No silver spoon in my mouth
Not a life of privilege
Because I am from the South-

My family was in shambles
Although they tried to do their best,
But when my daddy died,
My kin could finally rest

Things were never easy
No, no, no I just tried to do my best

My daddy worked the coal mines,
From early morning until dusk
Coal was in his family
Doing this work was a must

He never thought about it
Just worked all day long
Just like his daddy
Singing a black lung kind of song

Things were never easy
This life was oh so wrong

When things came tumbling down,
In that tunnel where he was
He didn't have time to get out
Yeah, that’s what a miner does

His pals got out ahead
Glad that they made it through
But my daddy was left behind
With a few buddies too

This life is never easy
But for me it’s true
