It was a warm July evening, my brother was needing a ride into town, there's a dance at the hall. I washed off the dirt from a long day of work while he hosed down the truck: we hope the engine don't stall

We got into town, my brother climbed out, said I ought to come in, take a chance. When I walked to the door, I looked 'cross the floor, I saw the prettiest girl at the dance

In her white summer dress, her hair done up all fresh, she looked like a daisy just bloomed. She smiled so sweet I hoped maybe we'd meet so I elbowed my way to her side of the room

Bet your dancecard is full, I assumed as she pulled her card up to the light so we both could see. Just the one open slot, I joked Is that all you got? The last dance of the night she'd be dancing with me

My brother found his old pals and they went looking for gals, so I leaned on a wall by myself killing time. When the last record began she took hold both my hands, I prayed that record would play for the rest of my life

The dances long gone, the kids have all grown, thank god for the mercies only heaven can grant. For the home that we made, and the record still plays, for the luckiest boy and the prettiest girl at the dance
