When I was just a young boy
Maybe 2 or 3
A gypsy woman picked me up
and put me on her knee.

She gazed into her crystal ball
and then she smiled at me (she said)
"Boy you've got the blues in you" and gave her guitar to me.

She said "now listen very carefully
to every word I say.
You've got to pay your dues
to feel the blues you play."

She said "the blues is like a caged up animal.
And your guitar is it's freedom key."
I can still hear that gypsy woman telling me (she said) "set it free boy, set it free. I can still hear that gypsy woman telling me
"boy you've got to set those blues free"
