Desert horse tired
From driving cowboys and thieves
Not his choice that he’s saddled
He’d like a reprieve

Missing the freedom
Of his former friends
They’ve all galloped elsewhere
Avoiding their end


Harnessed and harried
He’s dead in his eyes
Pulling and straining
A slave in disguise

Horses want freedom
And people the same
In ways we’re all prisoners
With different names

No one wants to be shackled
When they can be free
To make their own choices
With the freedom to see


Horses remind me
Of the choices I’ve made
I’m harnessed with heartache
Trapped by fear, and afraid

When I see the horses
Unburdened and free
I yearn to be like them
Without a saddle on me

No hate or regret
To furrow my brow
No more shackles or chains
Governing me somehow

I’m a desert horse driving
In circles, no end
Missing times that were simple
Running free with my friends
