Indian John was a post rider for the over-land mail
Delivered the bad land news and told a great tale
About a great chief that rode a mule that was always for sale
Indian John wore a bowler hat that he bought in France
While showing an Englishman a high German dance
He used it for trading when had no pelts
IT’S A GLORIOUS DAY, IT’S THE WESTERN WAY
Indian John rode through Utah while delivering the mail
Headed for Colorado and a town called Vail
Said a man named Brigham swapped him a wife
For a hog’s head of whiskey and a Bowie knife
Brigham told John if that one won’t do, you can gring her back
next spring and swap her for two

Indian John met Merriweather Lewis on the Continental Divide
Helped him get across the mountains for a buffalo hide
While crossing the mountain, they discovered an ark
With a captain inside that claimed to be named Clark
Merriweather told Indian John about Jesus and the Jews
But how the ark got there they had not a clue
Indian John just laughed at them and said with a grin
Boys I’m a Bhuddist and free from sin

About the day he met Custer at a hardware store
Quite a few years before them Indian wars
Indian John told Custer, Man I like your hat
Custer replied, well…how about that
As he sized up John, they began to chat
Custer told John you appear to be well-travelled man
Have you ever been up in Indian Land?
Indian John told Custer indeed he had, that the Indians he knew
weren’t all that bad
Well they drank Tennessee whiskey until their bellies were full
Indian John then told Custer, my real name is Sitting bull
Custer looked at ole John and said that’s absurd, and then passed
out cold without another word
