The crooked finger of the road
points me toward the waters.

There’s only one way out.

I know I must paddle
out of here,
but the cloak of night
covers me like a shroud
making it harder to leave.

I pull the deep wet faster,
anxious to disappear,
but the black fingers of what happened
tap me on the shoulder
and continue to shadow behind.

I did what I had to do
and now it's over.

Or is it
Ever over?
Memories sweating you awake
in the middle of the night.

No, I don’t regret what I did,
and now I can never forget.
