You're playing a very valid line for this. However it's somewhat muddy in fitting with what’s already there. I suggest that you go back to the original from Filo and add to that so that it's just your ideas which I think can work well.

Building tracks requires that we fit into what's already there. Otherwise new ideas (like yours) can work so much better on their own and will have the clarity that shows up the melodic line that is strictly your handiwork.

Altogether it's no problem that you've made this add if it's just a fun exercise for you, yet I do think your lines can work best if not mixed with another conflicting harmony and melodic line.

Go for it!

baronfum Well, I did keep myself low in the background to try to not interfere with your line too much, but perhaps you're right. I did try to keep the same key, which seemed to be D major/B minor with sharps on F and C, but we aren't on the same melodic line. I still like it, though. I'll listen to it a few more times and think about it. I like your sax and hoped to play along. :) +1

Wade I could hear you using the basic key of the vocals, and fitting with that quite well. My line is harmonic counterpoint, so is quite exact in terms of those counterpoint harmonies. Another different line, like yours, can also work, however when it's completely different it becomes muddy. Two melodic lines that aren't very coordinated = messy music. Your lines are fine and you should post them as is with Filo's track.

IMHO the best exercise one can have is to improvise melodic lines. Taking templates that don't have a melody line gives you the freedom to make it your own. There are thousands of templates here to give you a lifetime of practice and learning.
