Salsa Serenade

Miguel had a rose and a shirt too tight,
Two left feet but his smile was bright,
Saw her by the bar with the moon in her hair,
Said, Dios mío, then forgot why he's there,
He fixed his collar, took a breath in deep,
Then slipped on a spill by the speakers feet,
Landed smooth like he meant to slide,
Stood up quick like, With a wink, and less pride,
He checked his breath with a nervous grin,
Popped a mint, let all the confidence in,
Practiced hola in a mirror all day,
Then saw her face and said, olay?
His said to himself, C'mon, let the rhythm speak,
But he could hear his heart over every beat,
Still he marched through the crowd like a man unafraid,
With his pulse keeping time with the brass parade

It’s a salsa serenade, under neon light, (with a rose in his hand and a prayer in his stride)
He’s stepping on love but he’s holding on tight, (his feet gave up but his heart chose fight)
Spinning through the room like a fool on parade, (I think she's laughing, so he’s doing okay)

with a salsa serenade.

Now Miguel had charm, but timing? No,
Clapped on the three when the band said go,
Tried a little spin, nearly took out a chair,
So he shook off a giggle, unruffled his hair
But she took his hand, said, Follow my lead,
He said, after you, with remarkable speed,
Then he stepped in time for a bar or two,
Found a little grace in a borrowed groove,
The congas laughed while the piano ran,
Miguel held courage in the palm of his hand,
One eye on her, one eye on his feet,
Trying to look calm in a room full of heat.

Slow down, breathe in, breathe out,
One little smile turned his courage around,
Hands up, lights low,
She moved like trouble in a beautiful dream
No big speech, no perfect move,
Just two hearts catching onto a groove,
He missed the count, but she let it slide,
Now the whole room’s dancing on his side
