I've been sittin' wonderin' about the meaning of life.
When a thought came to my lonely mind.
Seemed that all I ever had to do.
Was to look my brother and sister in the eye and try to be lovin', fair and kind.
Sorta like I do with my dear old dog Blue.

Well y'all might think it's a strange headline.
To think about people like my old canine.
But that old dog could teach us a thing or two.
He doesn't lie or cheat, swear or cuss, smoke marijuana or drink cheap wine.
No, he's always got a smile for me and you.

My dog Blue, how do you do.
Through thick and thin, it's been just me and you.
My dog Blue, here's a bone to chew.
You're a dear old dog that's always seen me through.

Well old Blue and I are like ice cream and pie.
One without the other will never fly.
A gal's best friend, he's loyal and so true.
He sleeps at night at the foot of my bed, we always get along, we never fuss or fight
Now do y'all get what I'm tryin' to tell you?

Well if people got along like a gal and her dog.
Instead of buttin' heads like an old bullfrog.
Maybe we'd all finally get a clue.
Do unto your brother as he would do to you, lend a helpin' hand and find some common ground.
And maybe, things would be better for me and you.

Well I think it's time to say so long.
My dog wants to walk and think I'll tag along.
But I hope you understood my silly tale.
The next time your neighbor needs a helpin' hand, an ear to listen, a friend to understand.
Well just think of them as my old dog Blue.
